MILLWALL skipper Danny Shittu is confident the Lions will stay up after last night’s another clean sheet against Crystal Palace.

A point away at Derby County on Saturday should ensure another Championship season for Shittu’s side, who have been sucked into a relegation dogfight since the turn of the year.

And the captain believes last night’s point against a play-off chasing side will give the Lions belief going into the final match of the season.

“That game gives us confidence going into the weekend,” he said.

“We knew Palace, with their attacking line-up, would be hard work tonight so we had to defend well.

“We kept them out really well. We would have liked to get the three points but we got one and are still in a good position going into the last game of the season.

“We can take a lot of confidence and a lot of belief from last night.”

Millwall are now two points clear of the relegation zone with just one game to go and a bizarre set of results on Saturday is now the only thing which can take them back into League One.

“There are teams below us that need to win now,” Shittu said.

“They need points more than we do, but we know we still need to go there and try and get the win.

“We couldn’t afford to lose last night and we are happy we didn’t.

“Confidence is high in the dressing room now.

“We need to concentrate on our game.

“The other teams will all be looking at us more than the other way around.”

Shittu received the player of the year award before the Palace game last night, recognition which the 32-year-old admitted had left him feeling honoured.

“It means so much to me,” he said.

“I came here late and had to really work on my fitness, which has not been easy as I hadn’t played regularly for a while, so at the start I had lots of niggles.

“All I wanted to do was to come here and play games.

“To be captain, to win player of the year, it brought a tear to my eye.

“It means so much for people to vote for me but I have to thank the players and the manager too.”
