KENNY Jackett has explained his decision to substitute Dany N’Guessan just 14 minutes after he came off the bench in last night’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.

N’Guessan replaced Shaun Batt in the 72nd minute but failed to provide the attacking spark needed to inspire the Lions to victory in a game they needed to win to guarantee Championship status.

An unimpressive display resulted in him being hauled off for Liam Trotter four minutes from time, a move which provoked extraordinary scenes as the Frenchman trudged to the dugout at a snail’s pace to a crescendo of boos from Millwall fans unhappy with his attitude.

And Jackett admitted afterwards his initial call to let N’Guessan go on had been the wrong one.

The Millwall boss said: “I didn’t feel that the substitution worked out, slightly opened us up and I needed to address it so it is one of them situations.

“You don’t necessarily want to do it but to get us over the line it needed to be done.

“I thought it was a reflection of his performance.

“I haven’t spoken to him about it but I don’t think there was enough there.

“Playing to instruction and playing with passion is something that you have to do at Millwall and I didn’t think that was right.

“Unfortunately it was a decision I had to make.”

When asked if there was a way back for N’Guessan at the club, Jackett replied: “That’s a good question.

“I would be surprised if he plays again this season for Saturday.

“Andy Keogh and Shaun Batt gave it everything that they’ve got, Trotter will be an addition for us if his knee is OK.

“He has done very well to put himself up Liam Trotter because he has not been 100 percent since he did it at Birmingham and he felt coming off the bench he would be OK.

“I don’t know how he will feel for this Saturday but in terms of our options anyway hopefully we’ve got as many options as possible for Saturday in the forward positions because we will need that right the way through the club.”
