SUPERSUB Jonathan Obika will remain patient as he waits for a rare start in a Charlton shirt before his loan spell at The Valley ends in a fortnight.

The striker has developed a knack for scoring injury-time goals for the Addicks and fired home the 90th minute winner in the 2-1 victory against Wolves at the Valley on Saturday.

But despite winning Chris Powell’s side four valuable points in the previous two home games, the Tottenham loanee insists he won’t be asking for a start and will instead let his football do the talking.

Obika said: “I don’t think I have to knock on the gaffer’s door.

“In training I just have to keep doing the stuff that would hopefully get me into the starting XI.

“I’ll focus on the two games coming up, try and score more goals and put in good performances.”

“It’s been frustrating but it’s a great squad of players and everyone wants to play.

“There’s only 11 players that the gaffer can pick, so all you can do is keep your head down and keep on going.”

Charlton opened the scoring through Dorian Dervite after 63 minutes before Kevin Doyle levelled for Wolves just three minutes later.

Obika was unleashed with 10 minutes remaining as the home side searched for a winner and he duly obliged, firing into the bottom corner following Danny Green’s deflected effort.

Obika said: “Fortunately it fell to me.

“I just thought ‘keep it down and get good contact’.

“You could see what it meant to the fans.

“I’m just glad to contribute and the main thing is the points on the board.”

The Addicks are now six games unbeaten and with only two matches remaining Charlton still have an outside chance of reaching the play-offs, with five points separating them from sixth-placed Bolton.

And the striker believes he and his team-mates will do all they can to get maximum points from the final two games.

Obika said: “Everyone is just focused on the points tally.

“Before this game nine points were up for grabs and the boys were saying ‘let’s get nine, that’s what we're going to do’.

News Shopper: Obika celebrates

“We’re six games unbeaten now, so we’re getting points.

“It’s the end of the season now, there’s six more points up for grabs, so that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Even if Charlton are to miss out on that final play-off berth, the loanee is convinced the positive end to this campaign bodes well for Charlton ahead of next season.

He added: “I strongly believe that with a few more games won at home, you never know where we could be.

“If the boys continue to have that strong mentality which we’re showing now, they will definitely be up there.”
