LEWISHAM bagged three medals at the London Youth Games schools finals.

The borough took a gold in the Year 7 netball, silver in the Boccia and bronze in the Year 5 & 6 tag rugby.

In the Year 7 netball, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Knights Academy defeated Surbiton High of Kingston 8-6 in the final.

Manager Danielle Roots was delighted her team had performed so well in their first year together.

“The girls worked really hard this year,” she said.

“We haven’t lost a match, so we are doing really well.”

In the boccia, Lewisham were looking to win gold and earn the right to compete in the national finals.

They had won the London Youth Games boccia finals at Westway Sports Centre the week before, but second best to Wandsworth on the day and had to settle for a silver medal.

Lewisham were represented by All Saints Blackheath Church of England Primary School in the Year 5/6 tag rugby, who were beaten by Stanley Primary School of Richmond in the semi-final to leave them with a bronze.

Greenwich took gold and silver in the sportshall athletics finals at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace.

St Paul’s Academy grabbed the Year 7 boys’ title and in the Year 8 boys’ competition, Thomas Tallis Secondary were the overall silver medallists.

St Paul’s Academy PE teacher and team manager Jason White was delighted with the result.

He said: “I’m ecstatic, the boys did really well.

“They trained hard for this and worked really hard on the day.

“This is a massive stepping stone for the boys and hopefully they will improve even more and participate for local clubs.”
