CHARLTON loan striker Jonathan Obika was delighted to grab the winner against Leeds at the weekend but remains desperate to succeed at Tottenham next season.

Saturday’s stoppage time winner was substitute Obika’s first goal for Charlton since he arrived on loan from Spurs in February.

Up until now the England U19 international has found himself mainly used as a substitute and the 22-year-old’s latest appearance will have given him confidence of more regular action at Charlton between now and the end of the season.

But with parent club Tottenham struggling for strikers at present, Obika is still hoping to be involved in the first team at White Hart Lane next season.

“Getting into the Tottenham team has been my aim since I joined,” he said.

“That is still the case and will be in the future.

“I am sorry for the injuries they have, as they have come at a bad time with them trying to push on, but I think they’ll be fine.”

Spurs have introduced players such as Andros Townsend, Tom Carroll and Jake Livermore to their first team in recent seasons and after nine separate loan spells, Obika feels his time will come.

“When young players make the step up into the first team it always gives us confidence,” the striker said.

“Seeing them work their way up to the first team is great.

“That is my target for next season.”

The former Millwall and Crystal Palace loanee made an instant impact as a late substitute with the winner against Leeds at The Valley on Saturday and he hopes to get himself into the starting XI as soon as possible.

A vital three points has lifted the Addicks into the top half of the Championship table and the pacey striker wants to continue enjoying his football in south-east London for the remainder of the season.

“As a striker you love to score goals,” Obika said.

“Coming on I knew my job in hand and I’m glad the gaffer showed the faith in me.

“I’ve really enjoyed it here.

“The manager, the assistant managers and the players have made it so easy to let me do what I have to do.

“They have filled me with confidence and that’s what I love.

“The gaffer is happy with the dominating performance from us.

“We deserved that win we thought.”
