Woeful Club battered by keener Cov

Blackheath 8 Coventry 30.

‘Outplayed in every department,’ was Blackheath performance director Yusuf Ibrahim’s assessment of his side’s display in this match, while Coventry will look back on arguably their best showing away from the West Midlands this term.

Indeed, had the visitors passed with a little more pin-point accuracy in their attacks they might well have won by many more.

Nevertheless, three tries and 15-points from the boot of Clifford Hodgson who kicked faultlessly, both at goal and out of hand, proved more than adequate.

Hodgson’s early penalty was quickly cancelled out by Rory Teague for Blackheath, but the full-back kept his tally progressing by converting fly-half Will Maisey’s try on 14 minutes, after Coventry had kept the ball alive through numerous phases, and added a further strike for a 13-3 advantage at the interval.

Blackheath’s best moment came after the break when the hosts mounted a period of sustained pressure before left-wing Geoff Griffiths side-stepped across in the corner, but for most of the second period the Club found themselves under a blue and white cosh.

On 51 minutes inside-centre Heath Stevens went over for a converted score, before Hodgson added another three points to stretch the lead beyond two converted scores.

Then, in the dying moments, a penalty to touch enabled flanker Brett Daynes to be driven across, cementing a well-deserved victory for Coventry and consigning Blackheath to their heaviest defeat at home since September 2008.

The Club will try to make amends next Saturday as they face National League One strugglers Sedgley Park at Rectory Field in a fixture postponed from January due to bad weather.

Blackheath against Sedgley Park is a 3.00 pm kick-off on Saturday 16th March.
