CHARLTON boss Chris Powell hailed the display of Yann Kermorgant in their victory over Leicester on Tuesday night, describing it as “10 out of 10”.

The former Fox, who made his first return to the King Power Stadium since his famous play-off penalty miss, put the Addicks ahead with a well-placed finish in the first half.

Chris Wood equalised on 69 minutes before a stunning winner from substitute Danny Haynes grabbed all three points for the Addicks.

Kermorgant’s goal meant he has now scored in both fixtures against the side he left as an unpopular figure and a welcome league double for the club where he is held in the highest regard.

Afterwards Powell joked: “He played the game like I would like from him every week.

“I might need to say to him we are playing Leicester every week, as he’s got two goals this year in both fixtures and it’s obviously pleasing for him.

“I spoke to him on Monday and I spoke to before the game just one-on-one and said to him that he has got nothing to prove to anyone, what happened was a long time ago.

“Really he didn’t get much booing, because I think in the end people are quite fed up about what happened.

“It happens in football, you have good and bad experiences and as long as you learn from them, then that’s fine.

“Yann has certainly done that. He has come down to London and he has accepted when he has played or not played.

“He’s a good squad player, a very good team member and accepts when I ask him to play up front on his own, he’ll do it.

“Sometimes he’ll come out of the team and I have to do that.”

Powell added: “Last year I didn’t have to make many changes.

“Yann has made himself a hero with our fans, scoring on Tuesday I thought he took his line really well and led the line superbly well.

“He said to me ‘if I score I won’t over react’, which I thought was quite noble of him as some people would run around the ground five or six times.

“But I think that shows the measure of him.

“He won every header virtually.

“It was an immense performance from him, but obviously backed up by all of the other players as well.”

Last night’s win could prove to be crucial for the Charlton, who had begun to get sucked back into a battle at the wrong end of the table.

But the vital three points lifts them into the top half again, meaning they are now eight points between the play-off places and relegation zone.

And Powell was delighted to get a first maximum on the board in five matches after surrendering leads in three of their previous four games.

He said: “Any win in the Championship is pleasing, especially on the back of the run that we have had.

“We needed a result and we certainly worked hard and were made to work hard for it by Leicester.

“We’ve been playing well, but we’ve been hurt recently in games at Hull and at home to Sheffield Wednesday and a last minute equaliser against Birmingham.

“It’s been a tough period but the boys have still believed in themselves.

“I’ve got a lot of trust in them because they play for the shirt and they play for the club and they play for each other.

“They displayed all those qualities again and they got their just reward.

“I’m really pleased for my players as they believe in themselves, I trust them immensely and they work really hard for each other and myself.

“We’ve had two tough games away at Hull and Leicester, both sides who have aspirations to go up and rightly so.

“We lost a close fought game on Saturday, so coming here we were under no illusions this was a real tough, tough game for us.

“I’m pleased for them that they know they can come to a team with aspirations of the Premier League and get a result.”
