CHRIS Powell is confident his Charlton team can record a positive result against a Hull side currently flying high in the Championship.

The Addicks face two tough away trips in three days as they visit Humberside before facing Powell’s old side Leicester City on Tuesday evening.

But the Valley manager is not fazed by what lies ahead and is looking for his squad to continue their good record against the top sides, as well as their strong away form.

“You’ve got to give Hull the respect they deserve, they have been decent at home all season,” admitted Powell.

“They’re a side that have been in the top six for a long time over the 31 games and they have got some match winners.

“They will be buoyed by their win against Derby and they’ve got another home game after us as well.

“I’m sure they’ll be looking to do their best to get maximum points, but it’s up to us to stop that and I definitely think we can.

“They’ve got a manager who is very experienced and has been around for a long time.

“He’s managed to get a number of players that have played at Championship/Premier League level.

“They’ve spent a bit of money, £2.5m on Nick Proschwitz the striker, but they have brought in some clever frees.

“They spent some money recently on Robbie Brady and David Meyler, so they’re obviously putting their money where their mouth is and are having a go.

“Normally when that happens you need to get your side at least in the top six and I’m sure Steve Bruce will be doing his best to achieve that.”

Powell added: “We have done well particularly well against the top sides, maybe that’s the players just feeling that they have to up their game.

“We try to play at the same level and intensity all the time but you know that doesn’t happen.

“We have got two tough road trips now starting with Hull, which is a long journey for us.

“Hull are a side that have done particularly well this year, so we go there knowing that they’re a very tough proposition for us.

“But we have got Yann and Ricardo, both lads that have scored recently and they’re a handful for any defence.

“We’ve just got to make sure when we get into positions of strength, whether that is leading or putting teams under pressure, that we are clinical and try to be as match-winning as we can.

“On the road we have done particularly well.

“Our away form has been good so it’s a real test for us to keep that going.”

The weather over the winter months has not been kind to the pitch at The Valley and it appears Hull may have the same problem at the KC Stadium.

In the midweek win over Derby, Tigers boss Steve Bruce was forced to change the formation at half-time in order to play a more a more direct style, as Hull’s normally short passing game was being hindered by the surface.

Powell knows pitches all over the country are not in pristine condition at the moment and conceded both sides are just going to have get on with it on Saturday.

The Addicks manager said: “It’s been tough for him (Bruce) and it’s been tough for us, but you get on with it.

“A climate is not conducive to green pitches all year round and obviously if you spend millions on your pitch like they do in the Premier League, then you get a green pitch but other teams suffer.

“Hull City have said they are suffering like a lot of teams.

“Pitches do suffer over December-January time.

“We’ll have to go there and just adjust to it, get on with it like they will and hope a good bobble goes for us and doesn’t go for them.

“Football is about adapting to different conditions and showing different qualities in your individuals and in your team and that is what my players will have to do.”
