WELLING United player-boss Jamie Day isn’t getting carried away with his side’s good form after they beat a spirited Boreham Wood side 4-0 at Park View Road last night.
A 12th consecutive league victory has put the Wings to within three points of leaders Salisbury City with two games in hand, but Day’s high-flying side were pushed all the way by the visitors in wet and windy conditions.
“I thought we played reasonably well for the first 25 minutes and then we let them back in the game a little bit,” the Park View Road manager said.
“We got a bit sloppy but scored at probably the right time before the break and I think it was crucial.
“To get one before half-time knocked their confidence a bit and they had a go in the second half but I felt we were comfortable in the end and got another two goals.
“They kept going right to the end but you expect that because they’ve had a good run and they’re unbeaten in four or five games.
“Boreham Wood kept working hard but without causing us too many problems.”
The aim now for Day and his side is to take over at the top of the Conference South, but the boss wants to keep getting points on the board rather than automatic promotion talk.
Day said: “We want to try and catch Salisbury up because they’re a very good team and top for a reason.
“We’ve got some tough games coming up now so it won’t be easy to catch them, but we’ve put ourselves in a good position and we’re playing well with confidence.
“I don’t want to jinx it but we’re pleased where we are at the moment with a good points total.
“We’re playing well, but we know it can change easily at any time, so we’ve just got to take each game as it is and hopefully keep this run going.”
On Saturday the Wings travel down to the Kent coast to take on third-placed Dover Athletic, who are 12 points behind them.
But Day insists with a new boss at the helm down at The Crabble, it will be a tricky afternoon for his side.
“It’s tough game because Dover away is never easy,” he said.
“They have a new manager in charge so people raise their game.
“We’re pleased with where we’re at and we just need to make sure we go there and show the same level of commitment, work-rate and effort and hopefully get the right result.”
With the rest of the league split by five points from eighth down to the relegation places, Day believes it won’t need a huge points haul to win the title.
But the gaffer concedes they may end up facing someone in the play-offs who finish way behind them with a lesser points total.
“There is a gap opening up between the top teams and I think it’s going to be tight between three or four teams who could possibly win it,” he said.
“But I don’t think it will be a massive points total this year because of everyone beating everyone else.
“We’ve just got to be consistent and keep it going and believe the points we get are enough to get us up.
“The downside maybe is we finish second and play someone 30 points behind in the play-offs and end up not going up.
“Hopefully that’s not the case but you never know.
"We’ve just to keep going and pick up enough wins.”
