BROMLEY’S efforts of clearing the Hayes Lane pitch of snow backfired on Saturday when a very poor performance saw them slump to their sixth home league defeat of the season to Weston-super-Mare.

In a game where neither side impressed, it was Bromley who had the larger share of the first half play without creating any clearcut openings, although there were a few half chances.

Louie Theophanous saw his effort loop up off a defender into the keeper’s arms on 13 minutes after latching onto a long pass over the top from Sanchez Ming.

Six minutes later the striker turned in the area to shoot wide after Tony Finn’s corner had been knocked down by Danny Waldren.

Weston’s only effort in the first half came on 20 minutes when Nabby Diallo beat the offside trap to run on and send a rasping shot high over the bar.

Waldren should have done better on 37 minutes when he was on the end of a four man passing movement, but he shot wide before the midfielder headed over the bar from another Finn corner three minutes later.

The visitors might have opened the scoring within four minutes of the restart when Ashley Kington capitalised on a poor headed clearance by Waldren to shoot just over the bar.

But Kington made no mistake one minute later when he stroked home a low ground shot to nestle into the corner of the net.

The goal could easily have been prevented because Bromley made two mistakes in the build up.

Firstly, Liam Harwood gave the ball away to Diallo and then Marlon Patterson failed to challenge his opponent, which allowed Diallo to cross to the unmarked Kington.

The game deteriorated badly after the goal with the visitors content to sit on their lead and Bromley not putting any urgency into their play, continually running up blind alleys and delivering misplaced passes.

Bromley had a chance to equalise with six minutes remaining when a free-kick found Moses Swaibu clear at the far post, but his tame effort went straight into Weston keeper Lloyd Irish’s arms.

The Lillywhites thought they had equalised in stoppage time when Ian Daly’s effort beat Irish, but the assistant referee had his flag raised as the ball had gone out of play in the build up.

And with the last kick of the game, Theophanous’s shot was smothered on the goal line by Irish as Weston survived a late rally.

Bromley travel to league leaders Salisbury City on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
