AN 89th minute winner from former Charlton loanee Leroy Lita consigned the Addicks to a 2-1 Valley defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday.

Skipper Johnnie Jackson had put the home side in front two minutes after the break.

But Reda Johnson’s header drew the Owls level six minutes from time before substitute Lita decided the outcome as the clock ticked down to deny Charlton a fourth straight Championship success.

Giles Coke was lucky to escape with a yellow card for a horrendous late challenge on Dale Stephens in the fifth minute.

Scott Wagstaff’s 11th minute deflected low drive was easily saved by Chris Kirkland and Yann Kermorgant’s effort went over the bar five minutes later.

Charlton had a lucky escape when Anthony Gardner’s 21st minute header from a corner was going in until it took a touch off Michail Antonio and Cedric Evina cleared the ball off the line.

Antonio blazed an effort from the edge of the area over on 32 minutes before Bradley Pritchard’s attempt at the other end was blocked by a Wednesday defender.

The Addicks were unfortunate not to take the lead nine minutes before half-time when Matt Taylor did well to keep the ball in play and head across the face of goal, where Michael Morrison headed against the bar.

Johnson somehow fired wide with the goal at his mercy after Ben Hamer had dropped the ball under a challenge which went unpunished just before the break.

The home side took the lead within two minutes of the restart.

Chris Solly’s cross found Pritchard at the back post, who teed it up sweetly for Jackson and the skipper rolled a shot beyond Kirkland from 10 yards.

Antonio’s curling shot from the edge of the area flew just wide as Wednesday went close to getting back on terms and then Jermaine Johnson placed a low drive just off target.

Hamer produced a great save to deny substitute Lita as the Owls’ spell of pressure mounted, while Wagstaff had a crack at goal but his 20-yard attempt failed to test Kirkland.

But Wagstaff came much closer midway through the second period with a shot from just outside of the area which hit the post as the visitors survived falling further behind.

An unmarked Stephens blasted over from 25 yards when the ball fell kindly to him in a quick Charlton counter attack.

Sheffield Wednesday were back on terms six minutes from time when Johnson rose to meet an excellent delivery from Buxton and place a header past Hamer.

And things went from bad to worse in the final minute as the Owls grabbed what proved to be the winning goal as Lita fired home after being picked out by Johnson.
