CHRIS Powell is looking for instant revenge to last month’s controversial 2-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday when the Yorkshire club arrive at The Valley on Saturday.

The Addicks felt they should have had a blatant penalty and the Owls a man sent off either side of a perfectly good Danny Haynes goal ruled out for offside when the two sides met at Hillsborough just before Christmas.

Powell has admitted what happened still plays on his mind and is hoping to make amends this Saturday.

“We felt a lot of things went against us that day,” the manager said.

“One of their players possibly could have gone, Yann Kermorgant was pulled down in the box but no penalty, Danny Haynes scored a perfectly legal goal but it was ruled out.

“I spoke to the ref at half-time on the pitch but there was no swearing or aggressiveness.

“I asked him about the decisions and he sent me to the stands.

“Technically he said it wasn’t a sending off but I couldn’t stay on the touch line.

“On the Monday nothing was done about it, so it was quite a strange one.”

While he was annoyed with the decisions that went against his team at Sheffield Wednesday, Powell accepted Charlton could still have got something from the game.

A stunning opening goal from Wednesday was a killer blow but the Addicks boss is keen to get his own back.

He said: “Their first goal was superb and then they scored again in the 94th minute.

“We had our chances but nothing went for us that day.

“It is now a chance for us to turn it around and dish out some of the medicine that was dealt to us on the day and get the three points.”

A win at The Valley on Saturday will continue Charlton’s superb new year form and push them further clear of the relegation zone.

Powell is not keen on using the phrase ‘play-offs’ at the moment but continued good form could put the Addicks in contention.

“We are two or three points away from seventh and seven points from the top six,” he said.

“But also we are now a number of points away from the bottom three, which is important.

“The long term view is that we are good and proper in the Championship.

“We can wait and see what happens in the remaining 18 games and we want it to be more positive than negative.”
