A YOUNG fighter from Tsukuru Judo Academy in Bexleyheath took gold at the national championships in Sheffield.

All of Max Shorter’s opponents were taller and heavier in his weight group of over 66kgs.

However, this did not phase the 13-year-old as he won three of his fights within 30 seconds, beating all rivals with Ippon scores with powerful hip and leg throws to secure a place in the final.

Shorter needed to be on top form against his stronger opponent and was by throwing his rival forward to win gold.

Club colleague Brayden Quinn, 15, had three current national champions in his pool and although he didn’t gain a medal on this occasion, he felt he gained a lot of experience from fighting at such a high level.

Coach Dave Quinn said “I am very proud of both of their efforts and delighted Max has now got national recognition.

“Max has kindly offered his services in launching a new judo club at Dartford.”
