Summerfield spring second round surprise
1:01am Saturday 12th January 2013 in Sport By Steve Reed
The second round of the South London & Kent Pool Alliance’s Founder’s Cup saw only one real shock as top of Division Two Summerfield carried their league form into the cup competition.
They faced New Eltham Social Club who are in fourth place in the first division and came out 8-5 winners to set up a quarter final match against the winners of Rileys Woolwich and Fanny on the Hill.
This was a real David v Goliath affair as Rileys are top of the Premier Division and Fanny on the Hill second bottom in Division Two but there was no slip ups as Tony Halpin inspired them to an 8-4 victory with his three frame wins.
The only all Premier Division tie of the round was between Bellegrove Social Club A and Pickwick with the away side coming away with an 8-3 win although the match was much tighter than the score suggests.
Danny Foley won two of Bellegrove’s three frames with Martin Storey and Paul Gafa both scoring two out of two for Pickwick and Allan Formosa performed a nice finish for the victory.
Time fouls were like buses in this match as you wait ages for one and two turn up and before anyone asks neither were against Gafa.
Pickwick will go on to meet North Heath Social Club in the next round who went through by default as their opponents have dropped out of the league.
Glenmore Arms A made a great start going 2-0 up against Premier Division opposition Rileys Hotshots but they won the next five frames, starting with a break and dish by Steve Krishnan, to take a 5-2 lead.
Glenmore refused to lie down though and won the next three frames to tie the score before Hotshots turned up the heat in final set, winning the first three frames to take the match 8-5.
Alan Rothwell was Glenmore’s top performer winning two of his three frames and he was joined by Andre Cox, Steve Krishnan and Alex Dobbins for Hotshots.
Hotshots go on to meet O’Connors in the quarter final who overcame Fox under the Hill B quite easily by 8 frames to 2.
The closest match of the night was between Crown of Division Two and the first division’s Bellegrove Social Club B and was the only match to last the whole fifteen frames with Bellegrove eventually taking it 8-7.
Crown put up a valiant effort with Simon Searle winning all three of his frames and Peter Neale two but Bellegrove just edged it with Serhat Bulbul on three out of three and Stephen Marsters and Terry Mitchell both winning two of their three frames.
Bellegrove face much tougher opposition in the quarter final as Foots Cray Social Club made light work of Beech Tree Nuthouse beating them 8-2.
It was their clinical finishing that made all the difference as Dan Fenech, George Covington and Shaun Shephard all won both their frames and John Ufuoma won his only frame.
Lester Barrow and Dave Robinson were the only winners for the Nuthouse.
