CHARLTON crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle on Saturday afternoon at the hands of Huddersfield Town at The Valley.

Jermaine Beckford scored the only goal of a feisty game, which saw Dorian Dervite sent off just before the hour for the home side.

The visitors went ahead in the 12th minute.

Adam Clayton floated a hopeful ball into the Charlton area and Beckford chested it down before slotting beyond debutant David Button.

Charlton failed to force a real attempt on goal in the entire first period.

Former Evertonian James Vaughan came closest to doubling Town’s lead but his curling effort was turned about the post by Button.

Charlton were reduced to 10-men 12 minutes after the break when Dervite’s missed clearance was capitalised on by Beckford.

As he raced clear on goal, the Frenchman clipped his heels, giving referee Darren Drysdale no choice but to send him off.

Salim Kerkar had the Addicks’ best chance to level with a free-kick which was palmed away by Alex Smithies on 62 minutes.

Ade Azeez made his full debut 12 minutes from time having recently returned from a loan spell at Wycombe but was unable to force an equaliser.
