DAVID Button could be in line to make his Charlton debut in tomorrow’s FA Cup third round meeting with Huddersfield at The Valley.

The 23-year-old summer signing from Spurs has been a regular on the bench this season as Ben Hamer continues to impress between the sticks.

But his patience might finally be rewarded tomorrow with manager Chris Powell admitting there is a real possibility a first start could be on the cards for Button against the Terriers.

The Addicks boss said: “Ben Hamer has been terrific for us recently, he has been in a real rich vein of form and earned us a point against Derby and earned us three points against Watford.

“Regardless of what we are doing up the other end, he made some key stops for us.

“He is a good young keeper but David Button has come in and found opportunities hard but he has been training extremely well, he is in a good place and it is maybe a chance for him.

“We will have to wait and see and similarly with one or two other (fringe) players as well.”

Lawrie Wilson (broken nose) and Leon Cort (hamstring) both came off in the 4-3 success at Vicarage Road and although Cort is definitely out of the cup tie, Powell will wait until the last minute to see if Wilson will make it.

“I hope he will not be ruled out but we are being a bit careful with him,” the manager said.

“He looks a lot better than he did on Tuesday, that’s for certain.

“But we will do whatever the doctors and Erol Umut says and thinks.

“I’m hoping he is available but we will have to leave it until as late as possible really to give him the best chance to play.”

Huddersfield arrive in SE7 on the back of a heavy 6-1 New Year’s Day defeat at Leicester and searching for their first victory in almost two months.

But having won promotion from League One along with Charlton last year, Powell can see plenty of similarities between the Addicks and Terriers in their first season back in the Championship.

He said: “That is the nature of this league and people can argue the point at us.

“They had a decent start, then they had a dip, then they went up again, they’ve had a dip.

“You’ve got to remember as well teams like ourselves, Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday - the three teams who came up – all did particularly well last season but we’ve come into a league which tests you in many ways and it is about your response.

“I’ve quickly realised that.

“The times we’ve lost three on the spin we’ve had a response and we’ve done that twice.

“That just shows that a group of players can do it. I’m sure Huddersfield are thinking the same with what is going on with them but at any given time you can get a great result, as we’ve seen with Peterborough, with other teams and we’ve seen with ourselves.

“So I wouldn’t look too much into their current form, I really wouldn’t.”

Powell added: “I know it was a big scoreline at Leicester and no one likes goals going in against them but as we’ve seen quite easily in the next game you can run out three or four nil winners.

“It is just how it is in this league.

“I’m sure Simon Grayson and Glynn Snodin will get them going again and they’ll be looking for a response from them on Saturday, so we’ve got to be on our guard to more than match them and keep the pressure on them.

“We want to keep our morale boosting win against Watford fresh in the minds of our players when they go out there.”
