CHRIS Powell admits there is an outside chance Abdul Razak could return to The Valley at some point in the future after his loan deal was ended by Manchester City earlier this week.

Razak joined the Championship side on a three-month contract but the Premier League champions had a clause to call the player back after 28 days, an option they took up due to a growing injury list at the Etihad.

The 19-year-old made just two starts during his brief stay in SE7 and was replaced at half-time by Bradley Wright-Phillips in the 1-0 home defeat to Barnsley on October 20.

He was an unused substitute in the 1-1 away draws at Leeds and Wolves, although Powell was keen to stress Razak’s limited first team chances had not been a factor in City’s decision to end the loan early.

“No, he just got recalled,” the Charlton manager said.

“Our 28 days were gone so even though he was here for three months, we do have a call back and they feel they’ve got a bit of a problem with injuries in midfield and there’s nothing we can do about that.

“I wanted him to continue his education here.

“No team can demand a player plays, because if a player comes to you on loan and he’s not performing in training or in games, then obviously he doesn’t play.

“It’s not because he comes from a side that’s bigger than you that he has to play, so it’s never a case of that between Man City and ourselves.

“It’s a case that he came in and done very well against Blackpool, stayed in against Barnsley and we didn’t perform.

“I made a change, and of course I had to make a change for Leeds with a different style of play, which worked ever so well.

“So I carried that on at Wolves, which was hard for the players that were out of the team.

“But he’s a very good kid and he’s got a bit of a future in the game, for sure.

“He showed a lot of qualities in the games he played and in training.

“Sadly that’s come to an end but you can see why he’s rated so highly at Man City and I wish him well.”

When asked could Razak come back to The Valley if the circumstances were right, Powell said: “Possibly. I think at the moment Man City are looking at the amount of games they’ve got with Champions League and missing a number of midfielders so, a bit like I would do, you want to cover yourself and not leave yourself short.

“I think they’ve seen the benefits of him coming here and we’ll have to wait and see whether that happens in the future.”
