WELLING super featherweight boxer Jack Dishart is excited after being handed a tough fight next month.

The 20-year-old is back in the ring on Mickey Helliet’s show at the Coronet Theatre in Elephant & Castle on November 23 to take on Aivaras Balsys in what promises to be an explosive encounter.

“I’ve watched a video and he definitely comes to fight,” said Dishart.

“But that suits me, the better boxers bring out the best in me.

“I would rather be pushed hard than box journeymen who are just in there to survive.”

Dishart is training for the fight at the Gumshield Gym in Eltham, where his gym-mates include Junior Saeed and Sonny Henty.

As amateurs, they were club-mates at Eltham & District ABC and now all are punching for pay.

“It’s a great gym,” said Dishart.

“We all push each other on.”

Dishart says he’s learned lessons from his professional debut.

He was held to a draw by Shaun Tribble in May and said: “I definitely want a rematch with him in the future.

“I started the fight well, but then got drawn into having scrap. I started throwing lots of punches when I should have sat back and boxed.”

Dishart has the amateur pedigree having had 70 bouts and his record shows a points win over Robbie Matthews (Heart of Portsmouth).

Matthews went on to reach the final of the ABA championship last season and Dishart plans to challenge for professional honours soon.

He said: “My big target is the British title.

“But before that I want to go for the Southern Area title and I want to be boxing for it sooner rather than later.

“I don’t want to hang around. I reckon I will be ready to fight for the Southern Area title in my fifth or sixth fight.”

A title fight tops the bill at the Coronet next month where Southampton scrapper Matty Tew meets Ibrar Riyaz in a clash of crowd pleasers for the vacant International masters lightweight title.
