CHRIS Powell is weighing up whether to stick with the same formation which earned a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Tuesday when the Addicks visit Wolves this weekend.

Charlton made several changes from the side tamely beaten 1-0 at home by Barnsley last Saturday for the trip to Elland Road.

Dorian Dervite was one of the main beneficiaries scoring on his full debut but he wasn’t the only one to impress and now Powell has to decide whether to leave things as they are at Wolves.

“Possibly,” he replied when asked whether it would be a case of same again in the Midlands.

“I’ve said to the players I’m going to use this squad.

“Sometimes players might see it differently to me but again I looked at the team and the balance.

“I do like having balance in the team and I haven’t had that for whatever reason.

“That’s down to me but I looked at Saturday’s game on Sunday and Monday and felt this was the way to go for us to give us a bit of a base but also to put players in that have a point to prove playing their first games that may pose questions to me: ‘I’ve been sitting here waiting for my chance’.

“I’ve looked at it and then said ‘right well there you go’.

“It was a sterling performance by a number of players, I could choose any one of the XI.

“Dorian Dervite coming in for his first game in not his natural position but he is a very good footballer and I felt he would be fine there.

“Cedric Evina came in, Rob Hulse came in, I pushed Lawrie Wilson to the right side of midfield but he is no stranger to that, Chris Solly was back on his natural side, Johnnie Jackson coming in and then Bradley Pritchard coming in five minutes before kick-off because of Dale’s injury.

“There were a lot of changes but I’ve got trust in these players, they want to do well.

“I feel real sad for them when things don’t work out because they want to do well, they want to play well and they feel disappointed when they haven’t done themselves justice.

“But all I keep saying to them is that we’ve just got to move on, we’ve got to battle through it and mentally and physically get over it and move forward.

“That’s what they’re aiming to do and I’m really pleased with what they displayed on Tuesday, but of course we’ve got to keep following that up.

“We have to do that again on Saturday at Wolves.”

Hulse led the line for 86 minutes at Leeds before being replaced by Bradley Wright-Phillips and the manager was pleased with his contribution.

Powell said: “He done very well for someone who hasn’t played for a game for a while and played in that role.

“But I knew he would have the qualities to hold the ball up but also make good decisions and link up well.

“I felt he done that. Being that it was against one of his old managers and at a club he used to play for I felt he handled the whole situation really well.

“He is an experienced player and he knows the role. He will only get better with minutes, like all players, but I thought he gave us a tremendous platform to play from and really put himself about, linked up play well and had a couple of chances.

“I’m very pleased for him that he managed to get a start and he done particularly well.”

Wolves currently occupy the final play-off place going into Saturday’s clash but Powell believes the weight of expectation on the home side could work in Charlton’s favour.

“They’re in the place they would want to be, especially with having a new manager,” he said.

“But like most clubs they are under pressure to get straight back up, especially with the money they’ve received for Fletcher and Jarvis.

“He has spent a bit of money on players, so the pressure will be on them.

“They will be looked upon as one of the favourites to go up, so we go there under no illusions.

“We played against Blackburn at home, another side who came down, and should have beaten them.

“We know we are a match for these teams on any given day.

“It is up to us to go there and perform in a good arena, a vociferous crowd as they always are, and a team that drew the other day.

“They lost against Huddersfield in the previous game, so they will be looking to get a positive result, but I will be looking for us to go there and carry on our good away form.”
