Jackett livid with defence after Birmingham game
KENNY Jackett blasted his Millwall defence after the Lions were pegged back by Birmingham in tonight’s 3-3 draw at The Den.
It looked like the home side were going to run away with the points after Chris Wood struck twice in between a goal from Chris Taylor inside 18 minutes.
Millwall had further chances to extend their 3-0 lead but Birmingham reduced the arrears in first half stoppage time through Marlon King and within three minutes of the break it was 3-2 as the Blues striker scored again.
King completed his hat-trick in the 63rd minute to turn the game on its head and Jackett was far from happy with his leaky defence, who are still looking for their first clean sheet of the campaign.
The Den boss said: “It was very frustrating.
“In a winning position that is an understatement and the goals against column so far for us this season is embarrassing.
“It is why we are where we are in the table.
“You can’t give three goals away and expect to get anything on too many occasions, which was a great shame because it covered up some of the best attacking football that we’ve played this season.
“The first 45 minutes was very good and we finished the game very strong putting pressure on the opposition.
“There were very good balls across the box that we were unlucky not to get on the end of and with a flurry of corners as well, so we finished the game putting the opposition under pressure and in the right way.
“But as I say, the goals against column is embarrassing for us and people don’t need too many shots to score.
“I understand it is a clinical division and Marlon King has got a hat-trick tonight but there is a high number of goals being scored from a low number of shots and we have to reduce that.”
Jackett was reluctant to accept the outcome might have been very different if Millwall had gone in at the break with their 3-0 lead in tact.
He replied: “Maybe momentum is the big thing in a game, I do understand that but even so, 3-1 at half-time you still have to take stock of that and go again.
“We were unlucky not to score again, because that does push it away, but yes perhaps momentum is something and it gave them something to hold on to.
“From my own point of view it is a dozen games and we haven’t had a clean sheet.
“We gave King too much time in the box on too many occasions and he punished us.
“That’s a great shame because, as I say, it covered up some of the best attacking football we’ve played all season.”
