Danger to drinkers from fake whisky

WHISKY on sale in Lewisham could be laced with a potentially fatal chemical, according to a warning issued by trading standards inspectors.

They are advising retailers to check stocks of Johnny Walker Black Label whisky, following a tip-off from the genuine makers of the drink, that forgers are producing a rip-off contaminated with methanol, which can cause blindness or death.

The bottles bear tell-tale signs such as Spanish language on the rear label, no e-mark quality engraving and the word "distillers" in the Royal warrant statement is spelt "distilleries".

Retailers found selling the fake product could be prosecuted.
