Over the last couple of weeks, you probably all heard the sounds of large bangs coming from somewhere outside your home. Whereas this would usually send people into a state of confusion, or rather suspicion, last week it would have appeared as completely normal. This was because, as I’m sure you all know, fireworks night has recently passed.

Fireworks night is held in celebration of thwarting Guy Fawkes’ attempt to blow up the Houses of parliament; however I feel that most people view it as a day to look forward to in the cold chill of winter, and an excuse to get together with friends and family to blow a few things up. Apart from sending my dog into a panicked frenzy and resulting in anything in her path being destroyed, I rather enjoy fireworks. I find the colours fascinating and how people manage to synchronize them to music a real art form in its self. This is a real improvement compared to how I felt as a child, as I was more interested in the fair that usually accompanied the fireworks than the actual thing themselves.

Last Saturday I was luckily enough to be running a stall selling snacks at Langley Park School for Girls Fireworks night. I had arrived two hours before the fireworks were due to start in order to prepare to spend those next two hours furiously selling cakes and other snacks in the freezing cold weather. However, I was surprised to see that people started arriving within half an hour of me. I assumed that they had got the time wrong and inquired as to whether my assumption was correct, only to be told that they in fact just wanted to arrive early. I was a bit shocked at this, but soon found out why they were so willing to brave waiting in the cold for the fireworks to start.

The atmosphere was certainly amazing! Many people arrived early, and you could feel the air almost buzzing with excitement. There were plenty of things to buy such as hot food and snack to light sabers and glow in the dark bunny ears. The adults were satisfied to let their kids run about with their light up swords, while they could relax and have a hot chocolate. The fireworks themselves were also spectacular, enough to distract me from my fingers and toes which felt like they were just about to develop frostbite. The music was also good, with songs by cold play and other various artists.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised at how the night went, and even though I was basically freezing and the traffic was bad on the way home, I am definitely hoping to go next year, and recommend you do too.
