Sombrero, fedora or panama?

With the approach of Ascot’s “Ladies Day” I asked myself the question, “When did I last see a woman wearing a hat?” Not including the wooly variety, the truthful answer is that I cannot remember. Every year at Ascot, ladies are assigned a specific day when they can go all out with the most exotic, hypnotic and generally bizarre hats, as well as looking as elegant and sophisticated as possible. Whilst the dress code states “Many wear hats although this is not compulsory” it gives people an opportunity to wear an item of clothing that only gets to come out of the wardrobe once a year. Philip Treacy makes his living by designing somewhat expensive hats, yet the only time your average woman seems to wear them, is when she is attending a distant relative’s wedding. Yet aside from these special events, does anyone wear hats anymore?

Stall owners bellow, “One Euro, one Euro” in the hope that one of the shoppers will pay attention and part with a shiny coin in exchange for an icy bottle of water. Leaving the maze that is Quateria Market in the Algarve, Portugal is no easy thing to do. It takes a minimum of three hours to creep along every one of the intricate pathways that together make the weekly market, frequented equally by locals and tourists. And no one leaves empty handed.

The tension was running at an all time high for the year 11 students in school this week, for the dreaded French, German and Spanish orals had come all too soon round that extremely sharp corner. The pressure of having to learn numerous questions relating to family, school, health, social activities, and the media was almost too much to handle. Tenses, cases, and adjectives are huge struggle when it comes to that twelve minute fear inducing exam.

Iceland erupts over Europe

Iceland erupts over Europe Eyjafjallajökull is a large glacier in Iceland covering an active volcano of 1666 metres in height. The volcano had been monitored since 2009, when it first showed signs of seismic activity. There was definite activity as thousands of very small earthquakes were recorded, some of which produced tremors felt in neighbouring towns. In February 2010 scientists noticed the ground around the volcano had moved 1cm in 4 days, strongly suggesting a volcanic eruption. Then on April 14th 2010, after a period of being non-active, there was an eruption in the centre of the glacier. The lava was instantly cooled by the ice, and transformed into millions of sharp fragments like glass, carried up into the cloud of gasses and ash. Water rushed down either side of the volcano, resulting in roads being washed away and the evacuation of 800 people. The cloud of debris reached 4.8km high and blew in a south west direction over Europe. This caused the closure of airports all over Europe for several days, leaving travelers stranded all over the world. It is thought that airlines have lost £1.7billion, and affected 1.2 million passengers a day. With people taking extravagant measures to get home, such as £3000 taxi rides, this disaster has caused significant disruption beyond the extreme.

Dealing with Exam Stress At this time of year with examinations looming, students start to feel pressure in the strive to achieve their goals. Teachers constantly reiterate how important the upcoming months are, increasing the need to do well, and consequently increasing the stress. However, by focusing on how much there is to do you are only putting yourself under further pressure. Here are ideas to help students deal with stress: 1. Plan – Drawing up a revision timetable helps you to manage your time and realise that you can get through that ever-increasing pile of work. Planning time for breaks will also help keep yourself fresh 2. Revise – Reading through long passages of text will not enforce the information. Try writing out important notes with coloured pens, underlining the most important aspects to help you remember it 3. Test Yourself – This will show you which topics you need to look at again, and what you are more secure on. It will also make the actual exam seem less stressful as you are used to tests 4. Comparisons – Do not compare yourself to your friends, you will only worry yourself if you think they have done more than you or revised different topics. Concentrate on what you have done and what you are doing.

With the World Cup about to start, women all over the country will find themselves relegated upstairs with a magazine, desperate to escape the goals, the send offs and the dives that will no doubt have their husbands leaping around the living room. In the past years, chances were that said magazine she has escaped with would have had have pages upon pages dedicated to the wives of those playing in the matches. Whether it was who had dinner where, who is worth the most or perhaps most important of all, who was wearing what, each moment of the WAGs’ lives while their respective partners were playing were documented. However, this year Fabio Capello has banned them from attending the World Cup this year, informing them that they will be able to see their husbands and boyfriends once a week, to fly out for games and see them after. This comes after the shocking actions of the women during the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The FA paid for them to fly out and were forced to watch as they got into arguments in clubs, and drunk and shopped for the entire time. And it is a reasonable statement to say that their antics well may have overshadowed the events happening on the pitch; as they notoriously stayed in a club until 4am and drank £2,000-worth of champagne. During the trip the Wags were treated to a lavish banquet at a 12th century German castle by then England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson’s lover Nancy Dell’Olio. Included were Coleen McLoughlin, Elen Rives, and Alex Curran. They consumed 19 bottles of champagne, costing £3,000. So perhaps this year, with the focus away from ‘hooligans with visas’ as the WAGs were dubbed in 2006, the media will be able to return to what is really important about the World Cup; the football. And maybe with the country’s support behind them, we stand a chance of doing a lot better.
