To commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, Greenwich will become the next Royal Borough on account of its historic connections with the royal family. Greenwich will join the other royal districts which are Kensington and Chelsea, Windsor and Maidenhead and Kingston. From the 3rd February it will officially be declared a royal borough, as a formal document will authenticate the borough’s royal position and it will be signed by Her Majesty the Queen.
To mark this significant event Greenwich will be hosting a series of events from the 3rd to 5th February. They will take place between Eltham, Woolwich and Greenwich town centres. And the events are absolutely free, so anyone is welcome to come along. It’s sure to be an incredible weekend with a selection of activities to participate in. There will be stunning firework displays, musical performances which include singing and dancing, stalls and marquees, workshops and a spectacular parade to finish off the celebratory weekend.
The royal weekend will be kicking off in Woolwich with games on the big screen and a musical and fireworks display, the following day the celebrations will then continue in Eltham. There will be concerts at the Eltham town centre, and children’s workshops at Eltham palace. Finally to complete the prestigious occasion the last day of festivities will take place in Greenwich itself, so there will be more workshops at the National Maritime Museum, musical entertainment at the Old Royal Naval College and then the grand parade and firework show will then take place to draw a perfect weekend to a close. It is going to be an entertaining and enjoyable event for the whole family.
