Another new year, another set of train fare rises for commuters to contend with.

Season tickets are increasing by up to 2.5 per cent, while the overall average rise for all fares is 2.2 per cent.

The government has defended the fare hikes, pointing to record-high investment in the railways.

But unions and transport campaigners say some fares have risen by more than 20 per cent since January 2010, with wage increases failing to match fare increases.

Do you think this year’s fare rises are reasonable and fair? Do you think money is being used wisely to improve the railways or are commuters being ripped off through paying more for services which don’t seem to get any better?

Here are a few reactions to the fare increases - caution, bad language:

Warren Newlan: "Rip off, too much money for such an awful service."

Vikki Crocombe: "I think it's appalling especially as those who need to commute to London Bridge will only be able to get on one line through it until 2016 yet pay more for the inconvenience."
