The appalling costs of fuel bills as we emerge from winter were not only avoidable but reflect a profound failing by national politicians to protect consumers.

It turns out that for many years, energy companies have been breaking EU regulations by overcharging cash and cheque customers and there are some 10 million people who pay using these methods in Britain today.

The scandal arises because utility companies are only supposed to cover their transaction cost when billing you.

But it has emerged that most companies have been overcharging by as much as £70 per year.

EU regulations brought in 2003 if enforced would typically see households refunded by over £500, a sum that would go a long way in offsetting the hike in energy costs.

I have written to both the government and the opposition but no-one is prepared to do anything about it and the regulations have been ignored.

I hope readers will join me in continuing to press for justice in the way fuel bills are drawn up.
