I am not a fan of the Olympic Games. Like many others I deplore the disruption, inconvenience and expense they will cause, for the millions of ordinary people who will have to pay for them with little benefit. In particular, I regret the danger of terrorist attack they bring and the consequent need for protective measures - like the siting of anti-aircraft missiles in Oxleas Wood.

Having said that, I have never read a more stupid argument than that presented by Dave Putson in his letter last month (Missiles Siting Is A Risk Not A Deterrent, News Shopper, March 28).

He appears to think that the danger of falling debris from an effective counter strike, is a more substantial threat than that posed by a successful bomb attack. The mind boggles! Would he have advanced that argument during the Blitz, I wonder, when some people were undoubtedly killed and injured by shot down German bombers?

And would it surprise him to know that those of us who ran that risk, much preferred it to the option of allowing the Luftwaffe to drop their bombs unopposed and to fly home safely?
