Before we all jump up and condemn Brian Daley’s salary, we must put it into perspective (Brian 'Two Jobs' Daley Among High Earners, News Shopper, March 28).
He was appointed in 1997, by the then independent council, on a salary of £50,000, which has increased with inflation to its present level.
This sounds a lot, but his predecessor Mr Rodden was earning about £100,000 - the council would not give an exact figure - for doing the same job.
A salary reduction for the post of around 50 per cent was made and maintained by the town council.
If the previous salary had been maintained we would be thinking of £150,000 plus.
So Mr Daley is giving value for money.
It must also be stressed that his duties are not only that of town clerk but also chief executive of a successful banqueting organisation, run by the council.
If both jobs were separated it would cost the council tax payer much more.
