I have read with concern, the article regarding the "food growing project" in Maryon and Maryon Wilson Parks (Volunteers Needed For Grow-Your-Own Scheme, News Shopper, February 1).

My family and I have lived within walking distance of these parks for almost 80 years.

As a child I spent many happy hours with my friends, playing games, having picnics and enjoying the deer, swings and the beautifully kept gardens and grassed areas.

To the best of my knowledge, Sir Spencer Maryon-Wilson left the park land for public use. I do not believe this includes what in effect is "allotments".

A great number of people fall in love with the idea of having an allotment but when it comes down to it and they realise how much hard work is needed continuously throughout the year, they drop out.

Why not just restore the parks to their former glory? Take out the rotten unsafe trees. The rhododendrons still strive to grow and bloom. Return the areas around them into beautiful flower beds.

Restore the parks so that everyone can enjoy them, young and old.
