I am writing to you to express my amazement at an incident which occurred on Keston Common on August 27.

I was asked by the landlady of The Greyhound if I would be willing to bring some horses to give pony rides at the charity family fun day at the pub.

I agreed and said I would donate the money raised to Breast Cancer Research.

That afternoon we were surprised to see four security guards approaching us who told us they were employed by Bromley Council and were following up a complaint from a resident that we were contravening a by-law by having horses and a car on the common.

The car was there because there was nowhere else to park it and I had had to bring water and utensils for the horses plus riding hats and headcollars.

What sort of nonsense is this - sending four security guards on a bank holiday to follow up a complaint from a narrow-minded individual.

We had two children with special needs who got off the ponies with the biggest imaginable smiles on their faces. What harm have we done?

We raised £150 for a worthy cause.

Many residents could not believe the pettiness involved.

Bromley Council should cost these sort of exercises before it takes such drastic action - these four men's wages must have far exceeded our modest takings for pony rides that day.
