THREE News Shopper articles on August 16 show just how totally inept and selfish western society has become during the past 20 years, in the "age of plenty".

How this country ever managed to get through the dark days of the Second World War, one can only speculate.

Today, everybody wants everything and few, if any, are prepared to concede.

I refer to Robert Fisk's excellent articles, Mast Campaigners Want Mass March, Double Parking Is A Load Of Rubbish and Binmen Refuse To Pick Up Rubbish.

If refuse collectors are obstructed by double parking and impeded by lack of adequate surfacing at collection points, who is to blame?

It could be construed double parking is actually anti-social, especially if it prevents refuse collectors from disposing of the rubbish everyone is so anxious to get rid of.

Yet how many drivers will forfeit convenience for a cleaner environment?

Much the same applies to Mr Fisk's article about the masts.

How many of these ardent campaigners would be prepared to give up their mobile phones and thus eradicate the need for such masts to be put up in the first place?

Precious few, no doubt.
