It is the custom for each mayor to write a letter in November urging our borough residents to support the Royal British Legion's (RBL) annual poppy appeal.

Many members of the RBL will be in our town centre selling poppies and giving their time to this wonderful work.

All poppies sold help to finance the invaluable work the RBL carries out through the year to assist all those who have been involved in war and conflict.

I would encourage you to buy your poppy and to wear it with pride to not only support this worthy cause but also to encourage these good people in their work.

I would like to invite you and your families to join me at either or both of two special occasions to mark our Remembrance of those who fought and made the ultimate sacrifice.

On November 14 the Remembrance Day Service will commence at 10.40am at the War Memorial in Central Park next to the Library and will be followed by the march past. On Armistice Day, November 11, at 10.50 for 11am there will be a separate two-minute silence.

Cllr Bertie Bassam
Mayor of Dartford
