NO MEANS NO: I liked the idea of printing a page to place in the door or window against Hallowe'en callers (News Shopper, October 27). However, my neighbour and I said no Hallowe'en callers and spent the night hearing eggs being thrown against the windows and doors. We were lucky in the fact there were more than two people in each house. What would happen if the page was placed in a door or window and the occupant was a single, elderly person? They would be terrified. Our neighbour was, and she had five children with her.

FIREWORKS CAUSE INJURY: I write regarding They Must Put an End to Firework Misuse (News Shopper, October 27). Many years ago I was a member of the nursing staff in an operating theatre at an eye hospital. On and around November 5 each year there were casualties, some terrible injuries caused to innocent bystanders by thoughtlessness and, even now, I can still remember those who lost eyes. Maybe times will change if the users are made aware.

WELL DONE NHS: Recently, I was admitted to Mackenzie King Ward, Orpington Hospital, for a short stay. Much is said about the NHS, mostly bad, so I felt I had to write in praise of the treatment I received. All the staff were kind and helpful, the ward was spotlessly clean and we ate excellent food which was well presented and plentiful so much so, the lady in bed opposite decided she would like to stay for a month! Well done Orpington hospital and thanks.

OUT-OF-CONTROL DOG?: I had to suppress a wry smile when reading about Ken Weblings problem on Chislehurst Common (News Shopper, October 27). Snare? More likely a piece of barbed wire in someone's garden which the dog should not have been in. All dogs must be kept under control at all times Ken. Snares either kill or capture until dispatch by a responsible person who has to check them twice a day by law.

GOOD SPORTS: What a brilliant idea to try to make the rundown site in Kings Hall Road, Beckenham, into a state-of-the-art youth sports facility. Being an ex-Beckenham girl, I was saddened to see the overgrown state of the grounds which once was a well-kept lawn for cricket, with its white-washed picket fence. So, some on Bromley Council see what you can do.
