I am writing in response to the letter from Mrs Brook (News Shopper, August 18).

First, let me say I agree Green Street Green Waitrose is an excellent store and there would be fewer objections if this is what Tesco proposed.

Unfortunately, it most certainly is not.

The Tesco Superstore will have a sales area five times larger than Waitrose with over 30 checkouts. It will be larger than its store at Ruxley and will dominate the town centre.

To enable this size of store to be viable, there will be, by Tesco's own figures, up to 400 car movements an hour into the store.

This to be added to a road system which is already unable to cope at certain times.

It will also bring an increase in noise and air pollution.

In addition, there will be 400 less parking spaces than at present, which will result in job losses in offices, more on-street parking and less business for the rest of the High Street.

Finally, I note Mrs Brook does not like Sainsbury's, in the Walnuts.

She need not worry because if Tesco arrives Sainsbury's will probably close along with many other shops in the high street.

And it will not only be food stores which are affected. The Tesco proposal is for 40 per cent non food which will affect every local trader.

Tesco will not bring competition but devastation. End of competition.
