Congratulations on your What’s the Point? campaign to keep tabs on consultations.

In my view, the ultimate consultation issue involves the Government’s public review on Air Transport in the South East (SERAS). The study finishes on June 30, and many readers have written letters to object.

The Government has predicted 500,000 commercial passengers will use Biggin Hill Airport, yet has failed to recognise the vital lease between Bromley Council and the airport, which excludes scheduled services for fare-paying passengers.

On four other tests the airport has significant deficiencies. The flight path crosses over 200,000 residents. Aeroplanes the size of Boeing 737s and Airbus 320s, which rarely use the airport now, would dramatically increase in frequency to produce major noise and air pollution.

The flight path also crosses two key hospitals, Queen Mary’s, in Sidcup, and the newly-opened Princess Royal University Hospital, in Bromley. This lies less than two miles from the end of the runway, and aeroplanes would pass less than 1,000 ft above the wards.

There are many schools close to the flight path, where thousands of school children could be affected by noise and air pollution.

The road infrastructure is poor. Biggin Hill has only one class A road and a number of country lanes for access, which would be unable to take thousands of extra cars. The nearest rail link is four miles away at Orpington.

Will the letters have any effect? And how else do we protect our homes and families from the threat?

We know John Spellar, the minister for transport with particular concern for airports, has a special interest in Biggin Hill.

As a former Bromley councillor, member of the Labour Party and local resident, perhaps it is to be expected, despite his constituency being in the Midlands.

But will he listen to the voices of objection? Does the Government’s consultations mean listening to reasonable and valid concerns for our way of life, our institutions and environment?

All we can do to win our mission is implore even more residents who care, to write and state their views, before June 30, to influence the decision-makers in government.
