congratulations are in order for Mark Onafeko and Jamie Humphries for qualifying at the mega finals of the British Land UK Chess Challenge (News Shopper, June 11).

However, looking at the state of play in your picture, the chessboard appears to be the wrong way round.

The white pieces should always commence with the right-hand square being white. This square is initially taken up by the castle or rook.

From this we observe the white queen and the black queen commence the game on their own colours. If this placing of the board is not correct, it follows chaos will ensue.

This has happened in the boys’ game. I see Mark has castled his king. Because of the incorrect placing of the board, it has resulted in the king being placed in square B1 and the castle in square K1, they should have been placed in K1 and B1, respectively.

Their tutors should have given greater emphasis to this very aspect. Once again, congratulations Mark and Jamie.
