Each week I use this space to share my five thoughts – the good, the bad and the ugly.

But I’m not selfish, so I’m also very happy to donate the space to guest writers to have their say. Write to me using the contact details below.

1. After a weekend of so many deaths on our roads, I witnessed an example of appalling dangerous driving just after 8am on Monday morning. An impatient and inconsiderate white van driver ignored queuing traffic on Fairway to drive down the wrong side of the road before barging through more queuing traffic in Tudor Way. Your van’s signage boasted affiliation to check-a-trade – well, here’s a name check for you. The van belonged to Acorn Paving & Landscaping Ltd with registration SN64 LUA. We all make mistakes and do stupid things at times, so if you would like to apologise for your behaviour I’ll give you this slot next week.

2. Live and let live is as good an adage as any. But a colleague who loves and cares for garden birds says he’s at the end of his tether. The ever-rising number of domestic cats trespassing on his property has him considering drastic measures – arming himself, first with a water gun, and if that doesn’t work, an air rifle.

3. I just hope the humiliation of English cricket is made complete with a loss to Afghanistan as well. Surely the embarrassment of a defeat like that would be enough to spark the complete overhaul of the game that is required?

PREVIOUS 5 THOUGHTS:

4. Is anyone still in contact with any previous News Shopper editors? We’re compiling a special anniversary magazine and I would love to hear from them and include their stories. If you can help please do let me know and send on contact details.

5. Finally, if you’re ever asked to take any measurements of yourself, forearms, feet, inside leg, or anything else for that matter, take my advice and whatever you do, do not use a metal ruler. Though, I’m sure it will heal!
