Letter to the editor: Bob Ogley wrote an interesting article on the pioneer of steam power, Richard Trevithick back in the September issue.

Jo O’Donnnell responded with a knowledgeable letter (Steam pioneer will not be forgotten, October 8).

There have been many efforts to promote Richard Trevithick and knowledge of his achievements by people in Dartford and by Dartford Borough Council.

On March 17, 2007, to commemorate this great man’s life and work, a blue plaque on the front of the Victoria and Bull Hotel in Dartford was unveiled by the chairman of the Trevithick Society.

The event was supported by the attendance of several road steam engines. Since then, a free to enter steam engine and industrial heritage show has been held each year on the Saturday of the second weekend in May in Central Park, and will happen again in 2015.

The event is called Trevithick’s Industrial Dartford and is supported and encouraged by Dartford Borough Council. This year, a free booklet about the great man was published and copies are still available from me.

On the Sunday following the show, the steam engines, which stay overnight in a local farm, parade into Dartford Town, assemble with the crowds in Overy Street where the mayor and leader of the council pay tribute to Richard Trevithick.

All those willing to walk up the hill to St Edmund’s Pleasant, where the “Cornish Giant” is buried, then lay a wreath at his memorial.

We Dartfordians do care about our industrial heritage and in particular Richard Trevithick, we just have trouble persuading our neighbours to appreciate it.
