Every day we pull some stats from a survey and say have a chat about the findings. Today: What’s keeping us awake at night?

6 hours and 25 minutes is the average amount of sleep we get – which is more than 30 minutes less than the minimum amount of sleep recommended.

On average it takes 26 minutes to fall asleep. For an unlucky 13 per cent of people it takes longer than 45 minutes.

A third of people worry about paying bills and the mortgage.

Credit card and loan debt is a night-time worry for a fifth of people.

And 32 per cent claim work is something that’s heavy on their mind when they’re going to sleep.

62 per cent of people say they’ve got out of bed to try and take their mind off these problems. Top distractions are watching TV and surfing the net.

A quarter of people tackle their insomnia by making an online payment or bank transfer, or checking their bank balance online.

74 per cent of those affected by sleep issues are feeling the effects at work the next day.
