Letter to the editor: I agree with Laurie Mack (No room for the Tube, October 22), but what he does not mention in his letter is the reason why it is proposed to replace the main line train service to Hayes with Underground trains.

This proposal has nothing to do with providing a better service for people on the Hayes line. It is simply a convenient way to combine two other objectives.

Firstly, it provides a terminus for an extension of the Bakerloo line through inner south-east London and, secondly, it removes some trains from London Bridge, Charing Cross and Cannon Street so that a more frequent service can be provided on another line, such as north Kent.

The only benefit for Hayes line users would be a more frequent service, which would in no way make up for the lack of comfort and, for most people, a longer journey time.

Do not imagine some trains will be able to miss out some stations – they will not. And do not imagine the internal layout of the trains will be more comfortable. They will be designed for central London, so they will be like all modern Tube stock with lots of standing room, seats only down the sides and limited headroom.
