Letter to the editor: I do not know if the News Shopper would publish this type of story, but I feel the more people that are made aware of the current phone scam that happened to my mum on Saturday, the better.

A very well-spoken chap telephoned her, saying he was from her bank and that the bank could no longer send out credit or debit cards using Royal Mail. They would now only send couriers. Therefore, before they sent the courier, she must answer the security questions. She then unwittingly divulged her security details. When she challenged the fact that her card was not due for renewal, he spun her a line, told her to wait in for two to three hours and the card would be delivered.

She suddenly felt uneasy, dialled 1471 and found the caller had withheld their number.

Fortunately, she went straight to her bank and had all her finances blocked.

She is elderly and disabled and this has left her in a very distressed state.

I know a lot of people read the News Shopper and I hope you will address this story and hopefully make many of the elderly and vulnerable aware of this unscrupulous scam.
