Letter to the editor: I was pleased by your article about plans for an estuary airport being turned down.

Firstly, why build another runway? Would it not simply increase the number of flights and, therefore CO2 emissions? The government is committed to getting emissions down to reduce climate change, so do I detect an inconsistency in government policy?

Secondly, if a runway is built, the estuary option is the most expensive and least practicable.

Heathrow is not a good option either because of the congestion there and it is in a built-up area and the motorways and railways are already in situ although they might need upgrading for the extra traffic.

Work could not start at Gatwick until 2019 for legal reasons.
