Letter to the editor: Every time I visit Queen Elizabeth Hospital I have to walk through a haze of cigarette smoke under an enclosed canopy before I get to the entrance, despite “no smoking” signs being prominently displayed.

There is a designated smoking area away from the main entrance, but it is rarely used. The problem is that the “no smoking” area is not being enforced.

Other NHS hospitals have much better enforcement of no smoking. Why is it so difficult for the hospital to enforce the no smoking rule? There are numerous brochures in the hospital about protecting and improving our health.

It is high time that the hospital management became pro-active by protecting the public from smokers at the hospital entrance.
