Letter to the editor: At Lewisham Council, we will face some exceptionally difficult decisions over the next few years. There is significant and growing pressure on our budget.
The Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition has slashed funding for councils, particularly in poorer areas like Lewisham.
But at the same time, demand for our services – from school places to adult social care – continues to rise inexorably.
Together, this adds up to a “perfect storm” in terms of our finances.
Lewisham Council has reduced spending significantly in the past four years while protecting vital services.
But over the next three years, we must find another £85m in savings – equivalent to £1 in every £3 we spend.
We face some important and difficult decisions – and we want to give local people a say.
That is why we have launched the Lewisham big budget challenge.
You can see how we currently spend our money, have a go at balancing the books, and tell us how you think we should manage with tighter budgets.
You can find out more by visiting lewisham.gov.uk/bigbudget challenge.
You can also join the discussion at your next local assembly and tell your councillors what you think.
We face some significant challenges. But we are determined to give you a say and to face these challenges together, as a community.
COUNCILLOR JOE DROMEY, Lewisham Council Cabinet member for policy and performance
