Letter to the editor: Tesco’s Woolwich winning the dubious architectural Carbuncle Cup award for its “inept, oppressive and arrogant” development is also a fitting tribute to Greenwich planners (Tesco creates carbuncle, September 10).

One of the judges commented that “the building’s worst crime is it diminishes the efforts of those who have worked hard to regenerate this run-down, deprived part of London”.

This is the second Carbuncle Cup award in three years – the previous award was given in 2012 for the Cutty Sark development.

People are rightly beginning to question the ethos of the borough’s planners, especially in light of another inappropriate planning decision that is of huge concern to Greenwich residents – the gargantuan Ikea proposed for the already congested and illegally polluted Greenwich peninsula.

Local opposition continues to grow and the campaign is now raising funds to seek initial legal advice regarding the possibility of a judicial review into Greenwich Council’s planning process.

Perhaps together residents can put a stop to planned blight and carbuncle number three in the borough.
