Letter to the editor: Last week I received a Labour Party leaflet published by Labour Councillor Colin Caller, saying that “only very limited consultation took place” before our street lights were switched off in the early hours of the morning.

At a recent meeting he was also reported as saying that councillors had not been consulted.

After reading the minutes of the Gravesham transportation committee held on March 21, which was chaired by another Labour Party councillor, it is clear that the policy was not only first discussed two years ago but as part of the formal consultation process, views of local councillors on the Gravesham transport committee were welcomed.

The minutes show that Coun Caller was present at this meeting and the minutes can be found on the Gravesham Council website for everyone to see. Coun Caller must now answer the following questions:

1. Why has he kept quiet about the street light plans for the past two years when he was first consulted about the policy in March, 2012 – as the approved minutes of the meeting clearly show?

2. Why, if he is really against the street light “switch off” policy, did he not register his concerns about the proposals when he was requested to do so in 2012?

3. Is he standing for re-election next May and has this prompted his recent show of interest in this issue?

It seems that the Conservative Party is not the only one to keep residents in the dark.
