Letter to the editor: I would like to comment on the ice bucket challenge phenomena.

The main criticism to date is that the amount of donations received by the ALS charity does not correlate with the amount of people doing the challenge.

That is to say, there are people throwing buckets of cold water over their heads for fun.

What is most concerning is the amount of water that is wasted.

Ironically, people donating to one charity do not realise that their actions are hypocritical, as there are many other charities racing to help nations in which water shortage is a life threatening reality.

Perhaps, now that the ice bucket challenge has served its purpose of catapulting the ALS foundation into the spotlight, people could go back to donating the good old-fashioned way?
