Letter to the editor: Boris Johnson says you cannot fit solar panels in conservation areas.
This blanket statement is plainly wrong. So long as they are fitted on the property roof and not on the wall fronting the road. In some areas, councils have imposed tighter restrictions, meaning that residents are required to apply for planning permission.
There are more than 1,000 conservation areas in London and misleading and erroneous statements from Mr Johnson should not deter residents from going ahead, obviously checking first with the council whether there are any special conditions that they need to observe.
There are also various panels and more visually acceptable solar tiles and slates.
Solar generated electricity has the most potential of all renewable sources in London and must be encouraged. Not only will it cut electricity bills and our carbon emissions, but it should play a far greater role in meeting the electricity shortages that are expected in the next few years.
