Letter to the editor: The proposed Bakerloo extension to Beckenham Junction, Bromley and Hayes negates the need for a tram extension from Beckenham to Bromley.
If the proposal is to use existing lines and new tunnelling I would give cautious support to the plan.
Beckenham already enjoys excellent train and bus links to Bromley so if a tube link is on the horizon I hardly see the need for tramways disrupting our residential streets and highways and damaging local trade during construction.
Improved rail links to the Clapham Junction transport and employment hub and central London are the priorities. If Transport for London and central government have money to spare for transport they should immediately address overcrowding and unreliability on existing commuter lines into Charing Cross, Canon Street and Victoria.
Rod Reed, Beckenham
