Following the local elections in May 2014, the Labour party has secured 40 seats on the Croydon Council including the key marginal wards of Ashburton, Addiscombe, Waddon and New Addington.

Croydon council had previously been governed primarily by the Conservative party and though they invested a lot of money in funding new buildings and architecture in the town centre, some critics argue that ‘the council had  wasted what little money it had on building luxury council offices, while cutting local services.’

Upon researching the Labour party’s ideas for future improvement to the town of Croydon, I found many promising ideas. The first of which is establishing fairness throughout the community as there is currently a stark contrast between rich and poor areas in the Croydon district. As a result, the Labour party has formed the Croydon Fairness Commission and the manifesto claims that it will “recommend steps on how to improve the quality of life across the borough by making it a fairer place for all who live and work here.”

Labour has also decided to support 20mph zones in residential areas, where residents want it. An interesting idea I discovered was that they also plan to establish ‘play streets’ in which kids wills have the ability to safely play in front of their homes with their friends and where communities can meet.

Hopefully with this new shift in power in the Croydon area, the Labour party will be able to fulfil its promises and deliver without fail only the best for Croydon.
